Description of Incident:
Two officers from the Wilton Manors police department were forced to fire shots Sunday at an agitated suspect who refused to put his weapon down when directed, instead reportedly yelling at police to shoot him. The man died a few hours later. Broward Sheriff's Office homicide detectives, who are investigating the incident, identified him Monday as 50-year-old Thomas Carberry.
The incident began around 3 p.m. Sunday when two men notified law enforcement that their roommate had a gun and was making threats to kill himself, kill them and kill any police officer who arrived to help. When the suspect went outside, the men locked the doors but told dispatchers he was trying to get back into the house. They could hear him firing shots outside. When Wilton Manors police officers arrived at 3:03 p.m., they encountered Carberry who was still outside. He had a firearm in his hand, and the officers told him repeatedly to put the gun down. He refused. Witnesses later told BSO homicide detectives they heard Carberry saying "shoot me" more than once.
Sgt. Rick Shawver and Officer Robert Ferguson fired, and Carberry was injured. Ft. Lauderdale Fire Rescue transported him to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead Sunday evening. Sgt. Shawver and Officer Ferguson were put on paid administrative leave, which is the policy of the police department after a police-involved shooting.
